There are lots of advertisements for lint-free cloths and cleaning rags these days, but how do you know if you’ve really found something that is going to do what it says it will? Is there a standard by which you can choose a lint-free cloth? Will it suit your specific application?
The truth is that everyone has a different version of what “lint-free cloth” means these days, and it usually comes in the form of a mixed-material cloth that has some cotton in addition to other materials. The trouble is, depending on the balance of cotton to other fabric, these types of cloths may be more or less absorptive, less lint-free, and less durable.
As you consider your options when choosing lint-free cloth, you will first and foremost want to look for lint-free options that are 100% polyester and not a cotton blend. If you have an intended application that requires there to be no lint left behind, but is also absorbent, a 100% polyester cloth is the ideal choice. Other lint-free blends are okay if you simply need a wiping rag for dust and debris, or if you prefer high cotton content in your cleaning rags.
One other important thing to check for is whether a cloth creates ESD (Electrostatic Discharge). Most cloths that give off lint are also inclined to give you a little static charge when you least expect it. High-quality lint-free cloth will also be free of this electrifying attribute.
